Steve is able to explain complex ideas and make them accessible to the puzzled.” – course participant, ‘Demystifying Mysticism’

September – December 2022: Steve is offering a short (4 x 2 hours or a weekend) online course, ‘Demystifying Mysticism‘, which is a theoretical and experiential introduction to an Integral perspective on the mystical experience; a concise, no-nonsense, rational understanding of mysticism and meditation practice.

“When the universe as a whole seeks to know itself, through the medium of the human mind, some aspects of that universe must remain unknown. With the awakening of symbolic knowledge there seems to be a split in the universe between knower and known, the thinker and thought, the subject and the object…” – Ken Wilber, The Spectrum of Consciousness

· Integral Meditation: a contemporary, common-sense understanding of meditation and the mystical experience rooted in a rational worldview. Wilber’s synthesis of the mystical core of the major spiritual traditions with developmental psychology.

· Theory and practice: concise, simple explanations of the ideas—many of them ancient understandings seen in a new light; putting them into practice in meditations.

· The course includes: l boundaries and lines  l ‘direct’ versus ‘symbolic’ modes of knowing  l what are the personal ‘self’, the Witness, the ‘Kosmic Self’ (or ‘Unity Consciousness’)?  l time and eternity  l meditation as dis-identifying; meditation as transcending & including thought  l ‘witnessing’ meditation  l Unity Consciousness is ‘always, already’ the case (so why meditate?)  l humans as evolution-in-action

You  do not need any prior experience of meditation, though some will be helpful.  If you already practise meditation or contemplative prayer, you will potentially find a new, clearer understanding of your practice.  The workshops are open to people of any religious tradition, or none. They involve transformative practices; you need to be able to take responsibility for your own physical, mental and emotional well-being. If in doubt, contact Steve.
