Steve is offering an online seminar 6 – 8pm (UK time) on 31st March 2022 for anyone who would like to understand more about the spirituality which is expressed in Blue Pearl: Blue Pearl: Sacred Music For A Human Spirituality.

If  you are planning on coming to the world premiere this will give you a great insight into what inspired Steve to write Blue Pearl, and what you can expect when you hear the performance.

We are at a time in society when a number of powerful cultural changes are together driving the emergence of a new understanding of spirituality which transcends individual traditions: a *human* spirituality. This new understanding began with the so-called ‘fourth wave’ of psychotherapies, which include the transpersonal dimensions of human experience. American philosopher-mystic-scientist Ken Wilber has taken the integration of psychology and spirituality to another level with his ground-breaking ‘Integral’ synthesis, ‘the spectrum of consciousness’.

In this seminar we will explore some of the key elements of this emerging new spirituality and how they are conveyed through music in ‘Blue Pearl: A One World Oratorio’, Steve Banks’s powerful, ground-breaking new choral work which will have its world premiere on 14.5.22 in London and streamed online.

This is a unique opportunity to hear how a composer with a deep immersion in both psychology and spiritual practice has been inspired by the evolutionary edge of our cultural unfolding to create music which beautifully conveys emerging possibilities for humanity and for our relationship with the earth.

Steve will talk briefly about the cultural changes which are driving the emergence of the new human spirituality, and the key aspects of it which we will explore in this seminar, namely:

  • a spiritual path rooted in a rational (as opposed to mythic) worldview;
  • the answer to the fundamental spiritual question, ‘Who am I?’ (and ‘Who dies?’);
  • what is ‘eternity’?

We will listen to three movements from the Blue Pearl oratorio and explore how the music draws the listener towards deep spiritual experience, with a particular intentional relationship between sound and silence, experiencing the music as a guided meditation.

In breakout groups and in the whole group we will discuss what has been brought up by listening to the music, and by Steve’s presentation, and you can put any questions to Steve.

The guide price for this seminar is £20.00. But you can pay less if your income is such that you feel you can’t afford that amount.

The seminar is for anyone interested in choral and ‘spiritual’ music, the arts in general, and psychology/spirituality. People who sing in choirs and choir directors will be particularly interested, as well as those with an interest in Psychosynthesis (personally or professionally) or Ken Wilber’s Integral Model.
